The postman’s footsteps receded, the sound fading into the distance. She leaned against the doorframe, a faint smile playing on her lips, the mail fanned out in her hand. Among the usual bills, a card. Unsigned. A warm feeling bloomed in her chest.

She strolled into the house, her movements easy and graceful. The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air, a scent that made her feel instantly content. She set the card on the counter, next to the vase of sunflowers. The world seemed to be holding its breath, waiting. She had all the time in the world.
